Disputed area residents can vote in one State: EC

By The Assam Tribune

SHILLONG, Dec 6 Residents of disputed areas between Meghalaya and Assam would not be allowed to vote in two States, Election Commissioner HS Brahma said today.

If such people are found in both the places, they have to exercise their option. They cannot exercise their powers in two places.

Meghalaya and Assam have over 12 disputed areas along the border with residents reportedly exercising their franchise in both the States.

Brahma said, Such action is considered as fraud. Their names will be deleted and will be debarred from voting. Villages can opt to register their names with only one State.

We will ensure that collectors from respective districts (of Assam and Meghalaya) see to it that no mistakes are allowed, he said.

Meghalaya will go to poll in early 2013.

Brahma said the final electoral rolls will be published in January for Meghalaya.

We will publish the final electoral rolls by January 5 and our effort is to see that no one is left out, Brahma told reporters here after calling on Governor RS Mooshahary and Chief Secretary WMS Pariat.

Revision is going on since November 5 and our officers are scrutinising applications, he said on complaints of people not having their names in the electoral rolls. PTI
