Discussion on LGBT issues held at GMCH

GUWAHATI, April 22 - A discussion was held in the Academic Hall of the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) here on the topic of �LGBTIQA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer and Asexual) Community�, stated a press release.

A formal discussion on this topic was conducted at GMCH for the first time.

The discussion commenced with an introductory speech by Prof AK Adhikari, Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent, GMCH.

In his speech, Prof Adhikari expressed the need for constructive discussions and productive actions regarding the issue.

Dr Shyamanta Das, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry, GMCH and editor-in-chief of the Open Journal of Psychiatry & Allied Sciences, discussed about research conducted on various issues relating to the community concerned in the northeastern region.

Dr Dipjyoti Bora, Registrar, Department of Psychiatry, Jorhat Medical College and Hospital, presented two case reports which were very informative and enlightening for the gathering.

Dr Mythilli Hazarika, Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology, GMCH and president of the Society for Mental Health in LAMIC (SoMHiL) presented a very detailed case report which revealed the psychological and social struggles of the people of this community.

A panel discussion was also held on the occasion.

The panel consisted of Prof Joydev Sarma, Vice Principal, GMCH; Prof Dipesh Bhagabati, psychiatrist; Prof Dipti Sharma, endocrinologist; Prof Seema Rekha Devi, plastic surgeon; Dr PK Bagchi, urologist; PJ Baruah, executive editor of The Assam Tribune, and activist Milin Dutta, added the release.
