Discussion on history syllabus, textbooks

GUWAHATI, May 22 � On the occasion of its foundation day, the Forum for Research in History held a seminar on �Problem of Syllabus and Textbooks of History in Degree and Higher Secondary Level� at the auditorium of Biotechnology department of Gauhati University.

The seminar was held under the chairmanship of the president of the Forum Dr Shirin Banu, head of the department of History, Pandu College.

The discussion in the seminar was initiated by Dr Mrinal Bora, head of department of History, Chaygaon College, while Dr Nityananda Kalita outlined the purpose of the discussion.

Representatives of different institutions including B Borooah College, Handique College, Puthimari College, Narengi College, Chaygaon College, SD College, SB Deorah College, Cotton College and the Gauhati University participated in the seminar.

Dr Dharanidhar Goswami, deputy secretary of Assam Higher Secondary Education Council said that the decision of the Union HRD Ministry to introduce an equivalent syllabus in higher secondary level all over India has enabled more students in North Eastern region to achieve success in All India level competitions and get admission in different institutions of higher education.

�On the other hand, students of some peripheral regions have faced some new problems due to curriculum design and paucity of textbooks. Therefore, the teachers should come forward for writing textbooks to cater to the needs of the students. The teachers should also discuss the matter and inform the Council about the reality in the ground level so that the Council can take steps to resolve the problems,� he said. The seminar took several decisions, including working out a plan to popularize, expand and document the study of history in the North East.
