Disaster Reduction Day observed

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Oct 13 - The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) today observed the International Day for Disaster Reduction via a video conference with all the Deputy Commissioners and DDMAs of 33 districts. This years theme is focused on measures needed for disaster risk reduction at the local level.

The video conference began with a welcome speech by MS Manivannan, Commissioner Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of ASDMA, followed by a brief presentation on the rising death rate during floods and other disasters.

This year, 123 deaths have been reported across the State due to flood, which is a serious cause for concern, Manivannan said, as he put forward likely solutions to prevent such fatalities. The DCs of the districts witnessing high death rates during disasters, while discussing the probable reasons for the increasing death rate, called for generation of awareness among the masses.

Manivannan requested all the DDMAs to take the necessary action and organise area-specific awareness programmes ahead of the next flood season.
