Directive to lodge FIRs against rigging accused

AGARTALA, April 19 - Tripura Returning Officer Dr Sandip Mahatme has passed an order, directing assistant returning officers (AROs) in specifically named booths of Assembly segments under the West Tripura Lok Sabha seat to identify polling agents and others involved in rigging and booth capturing, and lodge FIRs.

All the AROs have been asked to file FIRs against the guilty polling agents and infiltrators into booths under the Representation of the People Act 1951, official sources said here today.

The booths under Assembly segments named by Dr Mahatme in his circular are as follows: (1) Chhchuria SB School in Mohanpur Assembly constituency, (2) Debipur panchayat office in Kamalasagar Assembly constituency, (3) Brajapur High School in Charilam Assembly constituency, (4) Barnarayan High School and Himmat Nagar SB School in Dhanpur Assembly constituency, (5) Kushamara SB School in Kakraban-Shalgarah Assembly constituency, (6) Asgarh Ranmonpul High School in Rajnagar Assembly constituency and (7) Sundar Tilla High School in Belonia. Action will also be taken against guilty personnel in many other polling booths where irregularities took place as per video records.

Meanwhile, senior leaders of the BJP and the Congress have been summoned by the Election Commission in New Delhi to take a final decision on the repoll demanded by the Opposition Congress and CPI (M). BJP candidate for West Tripura seat Pratima Bhowmik , accompanied by Sanjay Misra and party MLA Ramprasad Paul, have already left for Delhi, while senior advocate Pijush Biswas, representing Tripura Congress chief Pradyot Kishore Debburman, has also left for New Delhi. Biswas has stated that unless a repoll is ordered, the Congress will move the Supreme Court for justice.
