By STAFF correspondent

SHILLONG, July 7 - For the first time in its aviation history, Meghalaya will have a direct flight from Shillong to New Delhi from September-end. A tender has already been finalised in this regard.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma made the announcement after a meeting with the State Transport Department. Transport Minister S Dhar was also present in the meeting. Letter of Intent is being issued to the successful bidder, Sangma later tweeted.

Currently, Meghalaya operates a direct flight to Kolkata and a helicopter service to Guwahati and other parts of the State.

The Chief Minister stated that the Transport Department is also preparing a detailed project report (DPR) for setting up heliports at Umsawli in East Khasi Hills district and at Doldegiri in West Garo Hills district.

The DPR will be submitted to the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation for necessary funding. The meeting discussed the need for regular and reliable helicopter services, Sangma said.

During the meeting, the issue of setting up an institute of driving training and research in Meghalaya was also discussed. Officials of the Meghalaya Transport Department apprised the Chief Minister of land availability at Wahiajer in West Jaintia Hills district and Jengjal in West Garo Hills District.

The DPR is being prepared for both the locations, which will be submitted to the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways for funding as it has a scheme for setting up the model institute of driving training and research for road safety improvement.

The Central Government provides 100 per cent capital for construction of buildings, establishment of utilities, and the test equipment lane meant for the centre.
