Diplomat enlightens students on studies, job prospects in US

GUWAHATI, Aug 23 - Asserting that the two greatest democracies in the world, the US and India can shape the destiny of the 21st century, US Consul General in Kolkata, Craig L Hall today called for further boosting of bilateral ties between the two countries.

Addressing students, faculties and other guests at a function at Sudmerson Hall, Cotton College, Hall said that in the backdrop of present political dimensions, the two democracies should focus on enhancing strategic partnership to defeat terrorism and secure world peace.

Hall also dwelt at length on the genesis and growth of Indo-US relationship and pointed out that the full potential of this relationship is yet to be realised. �We have undertaken many initiatives to improve our ties with India and we are working together on many aspects as both countries share some common objectives,� said Hall, observing that faith in the democratic traditions has brought both the countries closer.

Hall said that apart from promoting economic ties with India, the US is also keen to forge close military ties with it. He said this defence partnership is mutually beneficial and sustaining and that the US is giving importance to jointly develop new weapon systems. �Our military ties with India have been growing stronger over the years. There have been more joint naval exercises, training, etc., recently,� he said, adding that education is another priority sector for both the countries.

Hall said that more Indian students are now opting to pursue their higher studies in the US and called upon the authorities in India to do the necessary so that foreign students including students from the US can easily come to India for studies.

Hall interacted with the students and replied to their queries, particularly those related to studies and job opportunities in the US. He was also accorded a warm felicitation.

Earlier, welcoming the dignitaries, Vice Chancellor of Cotton College State University Dr Dhrubajyoti Saikia said the relationship between the US and India has grown, encompassing a wide gamut of issues and this collaboration will definitely change the global dynamics.
