DIPHU, Dec 21 - Agitating employees of the Diphu Town Committee (DTC) on Wednesday set fire to furniture on the office premises of the urban body to vent their anger against the non-payment of salaries for the last 57 months.
The aggrieved employees have been demonstrating since December 10. But no initiative has been taken by the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) authority or the DTC management to address the issue.
The DTC employees alleged that though officers and engineers of the urban body have been claiming that priority is being given to the development of the town, nothing has practically changed in this regard. They further alleged that the DTC top brass has been siphoning off all the development funds.
In every fiscal year, the budget runs short of funds to pay the salaries of employees, the agitators maintained. There are complaints that the DTC has failed to perform even its basic duties, let alone cleaning the roads and maintaining public hygiene.
