Dimoria student wins Brilliant Geologist award

GUWAHATI, Sept 9 � Guwahati Sabita Sabha presented the Brilliant Geologist award in the memory of former Regional Director of Geology and Mining, late Uddhab Krishna Bordoloi, to Kashyapi Kashyap at a function held yesterday at Dimoria College. The function, organised in collaboration with the Uddhab Krishna Bordoloi Memorial Trust, was presided over by Dr Banikanta Sarma, retired Professor of the Gauhati University.

Inaugurating the function, DN Chakravartty, senior journalist, said that Assam at present badly needed a band of dedicated and competent geologists to discover the vast hidden mineral wealth of Assam and the Northeast India besides presenting authentic studies on the nature and structure of soil to ascertain the danger of setting up big dams in the region.

Dr PP Duarah, Head of the Department, Geology, Gauhati University, addressing the function as the chief guest highlighted the importance of study of Geology in modern times and the prospects for the young geologists in the employment market. Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, general secretary, Guwahati Sabita Sabha, welcomed the guests and said that the Uddhab Krishna Bordoloi memorial award has been presented with financial assistance from Kanika Bordoloi, wife of Uddhab Krishna Bordoloi, in memory of her husband.

This was for the second time that the Bordoloi award has been presented to a girl student of Dimoria College for standing first in Geology this year from GU. A souvenir brought out on the occasion was released by Dr Hem Chandra Deka, Principal of Dimoria College.

Dr RG Bharali, former principal, Dimoria College and Dr GP Deb Choudhury, Ajit Borkotoki, Mallika Roy Choudhury and Jagat Chandra Bora also addressed the function. The award was received by Hemalata Baishya, mother of Kashyapi Kashyap. Kanika Bordoloi, the donor of the prize, thanked the organizers and congratulated the girl on her success.
