Dima Hasao greenest dist of State

NEW DELHI, Feb 8 � Karbi Anglong and Kokrajhar districts in the State have witnessed the loss of 19 square km of forest cover, while North Cachar (now Dima Hasao) continues to be the greenest district of the State with 86.95 per cent of the area under green cover.

According to the satellite data of November 2008-2009, 27,673 square km area is under green cover, which is 35.28 per cent of the State�s geographical area. In terms of forest canopy density classes, Assam has 1,444 square km supporting very dense forests, 11,404 sq km moderately dense forests and 14,825 sq km open forests, the India State of Forest Report 2011, released on Tuesday, said.
