GUWAHATI, Nov 28 - Noted mathematician and distinguished litterateur Dr Dilip Kumar Dutta has been nominated president of the third State-level convention of Asomiya Sahitya Sanmilani to be held in Dhubri from January 6-8 at the Children�s Park, Dhubri, a press release received here stated.
Dr Dutta offered his consent to a formal proposal forwarded by Dr Lakhyahira Das, present president of the Sanmilani, on Saturday. This was stated at a press meet organised at Dhubri Girls� College by Dr Dilip Bora, working president of the Sanmilani.
The third day of the Sanmilani will feature a cultural rally. Thereafter, Dr Dutta will address the open session. While conveying his formal acceptance to the proposal, Dr Dutta also stated that, �Even while staying in America, I have worked for the promotion of Assamese literature, and shall continue to do so. The Sanmilani must work towards raising a mass literary movement for the sake of humanity and secularism. We shall collectively put our best efforts in this direction.�
Meanwhile, Dr Dilip Bora informed that noted Bengali linguist and litterateur Dr Pabitra Sarkar will grace the open session as the chief guest along with presidents from various other literary organisations of the State. The central committee of the Sanmilani will release seven important books on Assamese literature and culture on the occasion where seven distinguished persons from Dhubri district will also be felicitated.
In the press meet on Sunday, Dr Dilip Bora spoke at length about the illustrious life and career of Dr Dilip Dutta. Born in 1937 at Jorhat, Dr Dutta studied in various schools of Jorhat and Guwahati. He subsequently joined the University of Rhode Island, Kingston, USA as an Assistant Professor in 1967 and served as a Professor there till 2006.
He has published a number of books and monographs on Mathematics and Geometry. He authored 15 books in Assamese, prominent among them being Bhupen Hazarikar Geet Aru Jivan Rath, Nirmal Prabhar Geet Aru Narir Jivan Nadi, Ganesh Gogoir Rachana Sambhar and Bishnuprasador Prasad. He wrote over 118 articles in Assamese on various issues pertaining to education, language, history, literature, culture, mathematics, science as well as Assam and the Assamese language.
Apart from these, he has been actively involved since 1967 with various activities related to the promotion of Assamese literature and culture in the USA as well as in Assam.
