Digital cable TV service launched in Dibrugarh

By Staff cORRESPONDENT

DIBRUGARH, Aug 14 Manthan Broadband Services Private Limited, Eastern Indias single largest multi system operator launched its digital cable service in the city here in association with Unition Channel (UC). Manthan has its presence across West Bengal, Orissa, Jharkhand and in several other towns of Northeast like Shillong, Lumding, Jagiroad etc.

The digitisation of cable television services has become mandatory in India following recent Bill, which was passed in the Lok Sabha. The Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Amendment Bill has sought conversion of analog to digital by December 2014. The Bill has asked all cable TV operators to transmit TV signals in an encrypted format through a digital addressable system, which would be done through the installation of a set top box in every cable TV home.

Mathan is one of the largest cable distribution, media and entertainment powerhouses of eastern India providing analog, digital and Hi Definition cable transmission services to viewers. The service was launched in the city here by releasing the TV signals through the digital system. With the launch, consumers will now be able to enjoy better picture and sound quality, enhanced services such as high definition and video on demand content.

Biswajit Barkakoty, the Northeast Business Organiser for Manthan Broadband Services Private Limited said that viewers would able to choose and pay for only those channels that they want rather than having to pick from packages with fixed prices. The Bill will prevent local cable operators from bypassing the digital set top box and deciding the mix and price of channels according to locality and customer base, he said.

Manthan has its headquarters in Kolkata and has fully staffed branches in more than 50 locations. It presently provides more than 300 high quality digital cable TV channels in West Bengal and 200 channels in Northeast India and is the first multi system operator to launch High Definition channels in eastern India.
