By Correspondent

MANGALDAI, April 1 - The Assam Police has been closely monitoring the situation at Tangnijar village under Dhula Police Station in Darrang district following a few incidents of vandalising and looting of temples of the locality in the wee hours of Saturday.

Brojenjit Sinha, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Assam Police (Central West Range) along with Darrang district Superintendent of Police Amrit Bhuyan visited the area on Saturday evening to take stock of the situation following the sensitive incident.

The senior police officials assured the local public that they would conduct an inquiry and book the culprits behind the incident within a short time. At the same time, they appealed to the local people to remain alert so that no political force with narrow vested interest can create unrest among the different communities prior to the Lok Sabha polls.

A peace committee with the active participation of leading local citizens from different communities was formed on the occasion, informed SP Bhuyan while talking to this Correspondent. Meanwhile, the person who had been picked up by police after villagers nabbed him on suspicion, has been identified by a psychiatrist as a mentally disturbed person.

Suspecting his unnatural behaviour, the person was examined by a psychiatrist at Mangaldai Civil Hospital, who identified him as a schizophrenia patient, SP Bhuyan clarified.
