GUWAHATI, Oct 10 - The Pratibandhi Suraksha Sangstha, Assam (PSSA), an organisation working for the rights of differently-abled persons in the State, today moved the Assam State Human Rights Commission against the police atrocity on protesters during a demonstration staged at Last Gate here on October 5.
On that day, hundreds of differently-abled persons from various parts of the State had staged a sit-in protest under the banner of the Pratibandhi Suraksha Sangstha, demanding fulfilment of their various demands.
In the complaint addressed to the Commissioner of the Assam State Human Rights Commission, the organisation alleged that on that day, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Amitabh Basumatary, Sub-Inspector of the Dispur Police Station Nipu Kalita, constable Nirmali Devi and other police officials had assaulted the members of the organisation during their peaceful and democratic protest.
The protest was staged after availing proper permission of the Police Commissioner of Guwahati, demanding legal and constitutional rights for the differently-abled, the PSSA said.
�At first, they fired water bombs from �Varun� and then resorted to lathi-charge. The police personnel were so aggressive and rude that instead of resorting to a mild lathi-charge, they used brute force to thrash the innocent protesters despite the fact that they were all physically challenged,� the organisation alleged in the complaint.
The PSSA also alleged that police used expletives against the persons with disabilities during that incident.
�In the incident, members of our organisation, namely Ranjit Bahadur Chetry, Rezaul Hoque, Amrit Saharia, Srikant Pegu, Sanjay Chunkrang, Prasanna Sarma, Mout Kalita, Kulo Boruah and many others were severely injured. However, police not only attacked us brutally but also failed to provide proper medical assistance to the injured persons,� the complaint added.
The PSSA today also submitted separate memoranda to the President of India, Governor of Assam, Chief Secretary of Assam and Director General of Assam Police in this connection and demanded justice. Meanwhile, the PSSA welcomed the Cabinet decision to carry out a special drive for differently-abled persons in the Assam Police.
