DOOMDOOMA, March 28 - �Dibrugarh University will start Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) from this year,� announced Dr Ranjit Kumar Tamuli, Vice-Chancellor of Dibrugarh University.
Inaugurating a two-day national seminar on the topic, �Higher Education in India: its current trends with special reference to North East India� at Doomdooma College, which concluded on Wednesday, Tamuli also said that the UGC had already directed the universities in the country to introduce CBCS in their curriculum, but in Assam, it is yet to be introduced. Dibrugarh University is going to introduce it for the first time in the State in its undergraduate curriculum, he added.
The VC also mentioned that it would be a great challenge for the university to introduce this system with limited resources.
Earlier, Dr Prakash Jyoti Borthakur, Principal of Doomdooma College, delivered the welcome address of the seminar which was organised by the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of Doomdooma College in association with the Rotary Club of Doomdooma.
Rotary Club of Doomdooma Rotation president Sujit Kumar Baruah also addressed the inaugural session. The inaugural session was attended by Beena Deka and Dr Abdul Qadir, retired Principals of Doomdooma College, besides others.
Dr Bhaskar Sharma, an Associate Professor of Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University, participated in the first day�s technical session, while professor Dr Rajendra Prasad from Delhi University participated in the second day�s technical session in the seminar as resource persons.
The growth of higher education sector in India is now very promising both in terms of enrolment and number of institutions. However, in terms of access to higher education, it is highly uneven, stated the speakers.
The share of higher education in budgetary allocation has also been declining continuously in successive periods, which makes access to higher education difficult for the weaker sections. Moreover, public-private-partnership (PPP) model in higher education has resulted in hike in cost of higher education.
These issues and related sub-issues were dealt with by 45 academicians and research scholars in the papers presented by them in the seminar.
