Dibrugarh MP objects to selection of candidates

By Staff correspondent

DIBRUGARH, Feb 17 Factionalism is beginning to surface in the BJP here over the posts of the chairperson and vice chairperson of the Dibrugarh Municipal Board (DMB).

Local MLA Prasanta Phukan, along with a section of office-bearers of the district and town units of the BJP, recently announced the names of ward commissioners Anuradha Dey and Dr Saikat Patra for the post of the DMB chairperson and the vice chairperson respectively.

In a press statement, the Town Mandal unit of the BJP had claimed that the party unit, in consultation with all the 16 elected BJP ward commissioners, had unanimously announced the two names for the posts.

However, Dibrugarh MP Rameshwar Teli today outrightly rejected the names of Anuradha Dey and Dr Saikat Patra, stating that names for the posts of the chairperson and vice chairperson of the DMB cannot be decided by a section of party workers. He said that the local BJP unit had not informed him about the meeting for the selection of the names for the chairperson and vice chairperson. As the local MP, I must be involved. I was not aware of any such selection of names. Besides, the State BJP must approve of the list of names for the posts, he told media persons today.

Teli said that the party leaders had advised him to meet MLA Prasanta Phukan, and office-bearers of the district and the Town Mandal units of the BJP to discuss the irregularity in selecting the names for the two posts of the DMB and also to finalise a fresh list immediately.
