Dibrugarh erosion: HC notice to govt on PIL

GUWAHATI, July 2 � The Gauhati High Court, in response to a PIL (No 63/2010) filed by a few citizens of Dibrugarh, served notices to the respondents of the case which include Ministry of Water Resources, the Central Water Commission, the Planning Commission and the Government of Assam, besides a host of other Government departments on June 30.

The petitioners in the PIL had alleged that no effective steps were taken by the authorities concerned to stop constant soil erosion in Dibrugarh town,

Counsel appearing for the respondents has sought for weeks time to respond and the case has been listed for August 8 next.

The respondents have also been asked to file a response to the allegation that there are settlements on the dykes protecting Dibrugarh town.
