DIBRUGARH, Nov 17 - Members of the Dibrugarh branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) organised a satyagraha here on Wednesday as part of their nationwide demonstration. The IMA, the only representative, national voluntary organisation of doctors of the modern scientific system of medicine, had called the nationwide protest against the proposed National Medical Commission and a few other issues.
A proposed dharna in 2015 was postponed on the assurance given by Minister of Health, JP Nadda, that our demands would be considered and approved within six weeks. It has been over a year, and they remain unresolved, which compelled the IMA to take recourse to this agitation, said Dr Dipak Kumar Bhattacharyya, president of the Dibrugarh branch of the IMA.
Speaking on the various demands of the IMA, Dr Bedanta Bhuyan, honorary secretary of the IMA, Dibrugarh branch, said that the medical fraternity wanted a positive response to and time-bound action on their demands. He said that the IMA was against the recently proposed National Medical Commission Bill that seeks the dissolution of the Medical Council of India, a move which the association views as undemocratic.
It will cripple the functioning of the medical profession by making it completely answerable to bureaucrats and non-medical administrators. The IMA believes that instead, the Government must consider introducing amendments to the existing MCI Act to make it transparent, accountable, robust and self-sufficient, Dr Bhuyan suggested.
The IMA is also demanding a Central Act to protect doctors and medical establishments in view of the rising incidents of violence against doctors.
