Dibrugarh DC holds meet on waterlogging problem

By Staff Correspondent

DIBRUGARH, July 18 - The Deputy Commissioner here has asked the Executive Officer of Dibrugarh Municipal Board, engineers of the PWD, Water Resources department and magistrates to review how the problem of water-logging in the city can be addressed, and sought inputs from the officials, to find a solution.

Issues related to cleaning of drains, pumping out rain water and eviction of illegal encroachment in the town area were discussed in the meeting. After the discussion, the DC instructed all departments concerned to clear all blockages and encroachments which have been causing water logging problem in several localities of Dibrugarh town.

The DC also laid stress on de-siltation of the DTP (Dibrugarh Town Protection) drain and secondary drains by Assam Urban Infrastructure Investment Programme and Dibrugarh Municipal Board to ensure proper outflow of rain water through these drains.

The departments were asked to submit proposals of construction work such as widening of existing culvert to resolve water logging problem in the town under SDRF at the earliest.

It was decided to identify the original natural drainage channels of the town and the main blockage points leading to water logging so that the natural flow of rain water can be maintained and the water logging problem be solved at the earliest.

The Dibrugarh district administration had carried out some drives and dismantled a few illegal structures built over the drain in the Seujpur area in a bid to reduce the problem of artificial flood yesterday. The eviction drives are being carried out by the administration in an attempt to make way for water to get out of the town quickly through the existing drainage system. However, it is seen that the encroachers return to their encroachments, taking advantage of the administration's half hearted eviction process.
