Dibrugarh DC calls for preparation of urban flood action plan

DIBRUGARH, Aug 26 - Dibrugarh Deputy Commissioner PG Jha has urged engineers to set November 15 as the deadline for preparation of a specific action plan to address issues related to urban flooding in Dibrugarh Municipal Board area following a direction received from the Urban Development Department, Government of Assam.

In a meeting held at the DC�s office here today, it was decided to constitute a committee under the chairmanship of Additional Deputy Commissioner cum Executive Officer, DMB, Ranjit Konwar to monitor the preparation of the action plan and also finalize the scope of works to be included in the action plan.

He further directed Deputy Director, Town & Country Planning to prepare a master plan for a drainage system of Dibrugarh town and adjacent areas so that the same can be included in the plan.

After thorough discussion, it was decided to include other related works such as installation of pump sets at several locations in the town along with Jalan Nagar TE, widening of culverts and hume pipes, construction of new drains, extension of Titadimaru dyke with regulatory gates etc., which were identified earlier as solutions to urban flooding problem of the town.

It may be mentioned here that earlier this year areas falling under Dibrugarh Municipal Board saw severe urban flooding between June 24 to July 2, after which an assessment was carried out by the district administration to identify the various factors contributing to the flooding and a stakeholders meeting was held to analyse the short and long-term measures to be taken to address the urban flooding issue and later an assessment report was submitted to the government.

Based on it, Urban Development department has now directed the Dibrugarh DC to submit a specific action plan to mitigate the urban flood issue in Dibrugarh town.
