DIBRUGARH, March 28 � All Assam Sonowal Kachari Hojagota Aru Dabi Mancha has called Dibrugarh district bandh on March 30 in protest against failure of the state government to hold elections to the Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council for past seven years.
It needs to be mentioned here that Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council governed by Milan Sonowal, the Chief Executive Councillor and his team is functioning for the past seven years at a stretch without election. Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council was constituted on March 4, 2005 and Milan Sonowal and his team were nominated to run the Autonomous Council. As per rules, elections to the autonomous body should have taken place after six months of their nomination but has never happened.
Pranab Deka Baruah and Budhin Saikia, president and secretary respectively of the Mancha, said that the autonomous body received crores of fund in the past years but the community had not benefitted much. �We do not understand why elections to the autonomous body has been kept at abeyance,� Pranab Deka Baruah said. All Assam Sonowal Kachari Students� Union leader Dipuranjan Markary has also demanded dissolution of the present body and holding of elections immediately.
