GUWAHATI, Oct 1 - BJP leader Diban Deka, the prime accused in the SI recruitment scam, was on Thursday produced before a court which remanded him in five-day custody of the Crime Branch of Guwahati Police. Although investigators claimed that Deka was tracked down and arrested on Wednesday, the accused, on the contrary, had made phone calls to the media a few hours prior to his arrest, wherein he stated that he was going to surrender before the police. Contrary to the claim made by police, speculations are rife about Deka�s arrest being stage-managed after the accused himself offered to surrender.
Surprisingly, the investigators had sought Deka�s custody for only seven days. Sources claimed that Deka, who was allegedly hiding outside Assam, was in constant touch with a top criminal lawyer of the state having allegiance with the BJP, following whose advice, Deka offered to surrender.
Deka, when produced before the court, stated that he was not going to appoint any legal counsel for himself. Meanwhile, the CID on Wednesday evening arrested three close aides of former DIG PK Dutta � Dilip Gogoi alias Bhai from Borpathar of Dibrugarh district, Priyanath Gogoi alias Jintu Gogoi from Jiban Phukan Nagar of Dibrugarh, and Anowar Ali from Patrapur of Kamrup district. All three were sent to two days� police custody by the court on Thursday.
The CID said Dilip Gogoi and Priyanath Gogoi are accomplices of absconding accused PK Dutta, whereas Anowar Ali was responsible for concealment of evidence. Till date, the CID has arrested eight persons in connection with the case.
However, the former DIG is still evading arrest. His involvement in the scam came to light when a team from the CID raided his residence and hotel on September 23. According to sources, till date, police is in complete dark about his whereabouts and it has become a challenge for the CID to nab him.
�During his days in police service, Dutta led a number of investigations like this one. He is fully aware about the processes and techniques to be followed by police to trace an absconding person. So it is very easy for him to conceal his location,� a source said.
In another development, State BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass on Thursday suspended Diban Deka from primary membership of the party.
