By Rituraj Borthakur

GUWAHATI, June 20 - The Central government has asked the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) to award the work for the 20-km Dhubri-Phulbari bridge by this year-end.

The bridge, to be around 20 km in length, will be Indias longest bridge, surpassing the 9.15-km Dr Bhupen Hazarika Setu connecting Dhola and Sadiya, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May last year.

The DPR preparation for the Dhubri-Phulbari bridge is in final stages. The DPR is being prepared by the US firm M/s AECOM. We are hopeful that the work will be awarded this year itself. Tender for the project will be floated soon, an NHIDCL source told The Assam Tribune.

The Rs 4,044-crore bridge on the NH-127B connecting Assam and Meghalaya will be funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency. On the Dhubri side, the approach which includes an embankment and viaduct will be around 4.3 km, while that on the Phulbari side will be around 2.3 km. The navigation portion of the bridge above the water will be 12.6-km-long.

Around 103.78 hectares of land will have to be acquired for construction of the bridge.
