Dhemaji reeling under floods

By The Assam Tribune

LAKHIMPUR, Aug 3 Hundreds of people have been affected in Assams flood-prone Dhemaji district as most of the rivers were flowing above danger mark following continuous rainfall in the catchment area in neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh, reports PTI.

Officials said on Monday that Kumatia, Jiadhaol, Dimow and Gainadi were flowing above the danger level and rising alarmingly affecting over 20,000 people in 30 villages in the district.

However, no loss of human life was reported.

Road communication through National Highway 52 up to Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh was disrupted as a section of it was submerged by flood waters near Kumatia river bridge. The Border Road Organisation is monitoring the situation and efforts are being made to restore communication at the earliest.

Dhemaji Deputy Commissioner P Ashok Babu visited the affected areas and directed officials to provide necessary relief materials to the flood victims.
