Dhekiajuli to observe Martyrs� Day today

DHEKIAJULI, Sept 19 � In the 1942 Quit India movement, Dhekiajuli played an important role. On September 20, 1942 nearly 5000 people gathered in front of the Dhekiajuli police station to hoist the Congress flag. Due to reckless firing by the police, 13 people made the supreme sacrifice to the nation. The swahids are: Manbar Nath, Kumali Devi, Mahi Ram Koch, Ratan Kachari, Sarunath Sutia, Mani Ram Kachari, Tileswari Baruah, Lerela Kachari, Dayal Panika, Khahuli Devi, Mongal Kurku, a monk and a beggar. Hundreds of people, both men and women, were injured on that particular day.

Tomorrow under the auspices of the Dhekiajuli block Congress Committee, people of Dhekiajuli will pay glowing tribute to the martyrs of Dhekiajuli will pay glowing tribute to the martyrs of Dhekiajuli. The programme includes flag hoisting, swahid tapan, religious prayer, public meeting at Trimurti Bhavan etc. In the evening, a drama will be staged 20th September 1942 written and directed by Bhaskar Deka. The Government of Assam has already declared Dhekiajuli as swahid nagari.
