Dharapur-Mazirgaon dyke erosion posing threat

By Correspondent

AZARA, July 28 Unabated erosion of the 1500 metre long Dharapur-Mazirgaon embankment on the bank of the mighty Brahmaputra has been posing a serious threat to a large number of people in the area. It has been observed that erosion of the embankment has been continuing in many places due to incessant rains during the last couple of weeks.

It many be noted here that the embankment was breached in many parts, particularly at Jangarabari-Baripara which has caused great panic among the people living on the bank of the Brahmaputra . If the erosion continues, several areas like Sadilapur, Garigaon, Khanamukh, Jangarbari, Baripara etc., will be inundated by the flood waters of the Brahmaputra in the coming days.

It has been learnt that the Guwahati East E&D Division under the Water Resources Dept had prepared an anti-erosion scheme in 2009. But the authority concerned has not taken any concrete steps in this regard till now, the local people alleged. The people have also alleged that the local MLA of West Guwahati LAC has been maintaining a silence in regard to this problem. The residents of the area burnt the effigy of the local MLA Hemanta Talukder on July 20 at Jangarabari. The conscious people in the locality have urged the DC Kamrup (M) to take urgent steps in this regard.
