Dhanabir clinches int�l chess tourney

GUWAHATI, March 27 - Y Dhanabir Singh of Assam Chess Cub clinched the title in the 3rd Assam down town University International Open Rating Chess tournament which concluded here today. There was a three way tie for the top spot with Y Dhanabir Singh, Trailokya Nanda and Santanu Borpatra Gohain all scoring 7.5 points out of 9 rounds. However, Dhanabir was adjudged champion on the basis of better tie break score and Trailokya and Santanu had to settle for second and third position respectively.

The prize distribution ceremony was attended by Dr Narendra Nath Dutta, Chancellor of Assam down town University, Riju Ganguly, Director, Postal Service, Bishov Lal Pathak, convenor BJP Sports Cell, Pranjeet Dutta, Publicity Secretary, Assam Amateur Boxing Association, Anjanjyoti Das, president, Assam Chess Club and Dr Devajit Sarma, organising president, Dr Siben Dutta, president Akshayam along with a host of players official and guests.

Altogether 117 players from across the country participated in this 9 rounds Swiss League tournament with classical time control. The tournament was organised by the Assam Chess Club and supported by Rotary Club Dispur which carried a total prize fund of Rs 2 lakh. The meet was recognised by the World Chess federation (FIDE). Biswajit Bharadwaj was the chief arbiter and he was assisted by Lakhyajyoti Saikia, Swaraj Buragohain and Amit Kumar Biswas as deputy arbiters.
