DGP Bhaskar Mahanta tests COVID-19 positive

GUWAHATI, Aug 10 - Director General of Police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta has tested positive for COVID-19. He has mild fever and has opted for home isolation, sources said. Till Sunday, 2,259 Assam Police personnel have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, many of them from the State police headquarters. Around 1,734 have recovered. Six police personnel have succumbed.

A total of 1,123 new cases were detected on Sunday, taking the tally to 58,837. Around 42,325 patients have recovered.

Meanwhile, six more COVID patients succumbed to their infections � Sanjib Kumar Bhuyan (52) of Sonitpur; Subir Kumar Das (70) of Karimganj; Salil Choudhury (58) of Dibrugarh; Kali Santosh Bhattacharjee (68), Chandan Mahanta (26) and Ashok K Choudhury (65) of Kamrup Metro. With this, the death toll reached 151.

Meanwhile, Assam government has revised the Standard Operating Procedures for air passengers, under which any air passenger who departs from Assam within 72 hours of arrival need not undergo quarantine. However, the visitor will have to provide a copy of return ticket indicating his or her departure and will provide swab sample for Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) immediately on arrival.

�If the test result is negative, he or she shall be allowed to proceed. If the test result is positive, the person will have to undergo isolation and treatment as per the protocol for COVID patients. Symptomatic visitors, will also have to undergo RT-PCR testing and will have to remain in isolation till the test result is declared,� the new order stated.

In case, the visitor exceeds the 72 hours� time frame of stay, he or she will have to face penal action and will be placed in quarantine, as per norms.

Meanwhile, a plasma donation camp was organized for health workers at GMCH auditorium today.

Around 1,080 health workers have tested positive for the virus so far in the State.

Today, 375 cured health workers have registered for plasma donation.
