GUWAHATI, Nov 5 - Devotees will offer evening arghya (offering) to Sun God on the riverbanks on the occasion of Chhath Puja tomorrow. The four-day ritual of worshipping Surya that started on November 4, will culminate with morning offerings on November 7.
Like in many other parts of northern India, lakhs of devotees in the State also pay obeisance to the setting and rising sun during the festival.
Also known as Dala Chhath, the festival is mostly popular among the people of Bihar, Utter Pradesh and Jharkhand. But nowadays people of many other communities also observe fast and offer prayers on riverbanks seeking blessings of the deity.
Though the puja is offered on the riverbank on two days, devotees observe rigorous rituals over a period of four days. Today being the second day of the ritual, devotees observed fast for the entire day, breaking it after sunset.
In Guwahati also lakhs of devotees offered prayers on the bank of the Brahmaputra and other water bodies. Riverbanks have been cleared and decorated by the puja committees with the help of the district administration.
