Devotees pray to setting Sun on river banks

GUWAHATI, Nov 20 - Thousands of devotees offered prayers to the setting Sun on the bank of rivers and other water bodies on the occasion of Chhath Puja today. The devotees will break their fast after offering prayers before the rising Sun in the wee hours tomorrow. The bank of the Brahmaputra was thronged by devotees and onlookers in more than a dozen locations in Guwahati as Chhath was celebrated with all its grandeur in the city and its adjoining areas. Devotees offered prayers at Uzanbazar ghat, Bharalumukh, Sunsali and Pandu ghat, Railway Stadium Maligaon, Basistha, Lalmati, Hatigaon, Jyotikuchi, Narengi, Patharquary, Azara and Chandrapur among others.

Movement of devotees and diversion of vehicular traffic in several routes led to traffic jams in the city in the evening. In view of ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Department of Health and Family Welfare has asked all concerned including organisers and devotees to take necessary precautions to contain the spread of infections. Children below 10 years and adults above 65 years have been advised to stay at home.

The district administration has also imposed restrictions on organising cultural functions and other programmes this time in view of the pandemic.
