GUWAHATI, Jan 16 � The Congress Party will play the twin cards of overall development of the state, and welfare initiatives for the masses, in seeking to reach out to voters during the run up to the assembly elections in Assam.
This was stated by Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Bhubaneshwar Kalita while interacting with media persons at Rajiv Bhawan today.
It was also revealed that the doors of the party would be open to other like minded parties who wished to have political alliances or understanding with the Congress. He said this in reference to possible ties with parties like AUDF and BPF.
With the aim of building a strong base at the grassroots, the State Congress has planned an initiative that would involve 18,828 booth committee members across Assam. The members would gather for a brainstorming session on January 23 to be held at Khanapara, Guwahati.
"The meeting would discuss organisational needs in view of the coming elections, and will also focus on issues which are of current political interest", Kalita noted.
Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi has been invited to grace the occasion, but confirmation from her office is yet to be received. However, a host of senior Congress leaders, including Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, and AICC poll in-charge for Assam, Digvijay Singh will address the gathering of party workers. Similar meets will be organised at district levels, where the poll strategy would be given more teeth.
Kalita claimed under the Congress led government, Assam has taken impressive steps in the last decade. "The results of developmental work have been seen in agriculture, infrastructure, education, among others�and the party will reach out to voters with this message," he remarked.
Kalita also spoke about the screening process of poll candidates, adding that it would involve approval at several stages. The final list would have the nod of the central poll committee.
