SILCHAR, Dec 26: Besides developing the overall infrastructure of cricket in Mizoram, stress would be laid to improve conditions for the sport across the Northeast, said Khairul Jamal Mazumder, member of Governing Council, Board of Control for Cricket in India ( BCCI).
In an interaction with sports journalists here at the Meet the Press organised by Barak Upotyokya Krira Sangbadik Sanstha (BUKSS), Mazumder said the move by the BCCI to allot two IPL matches to Guwahati in 2020 shall boost the spirit of the game across Northeast and pull more people into the ground.
Mazumder, who is also secretary of Cricket Association of Mizoram informed that owing to lack of facilities including proper field, the state team has had to look for home venues in Jorhat and Vizag. We dont have proper fields for our players to practice and play Ranji matches. Hence we had wished to make SM Dev Stadium in Silchar our home venue. However, on our plea, curator Ashish Bhowmick was sent here by the Board for inspection. It was based on his dissatisfactory report that we could not go ahead with Silchar as our venue and had to opt for other locations.
However, I would make all efforts to develop cricket in Northeast. Moreover, steps will always be extended to help the DSA Silchar to develop its infrastructure and ground conditions so that we might get to use the ground as our home venue in the future, Mazumder said.
On the other hand, the BUKSS members felicitated Mazumder for his induction into the BCCI. Also, vice president of the sports journalist body Riten Bhattacharjee was honoured for winning the post of vice president at the Silchar Press Club elections recently.
