JORHAT, March 30 - Claims of providing well-paved rural roads, health care facilities, subsidised rice and contractual jobs to youths and old-age pensions and few other developmental activities during the last 15 years are becoming louder gradually in the election campaign of the Congress party even at the remotest areas of Titabor, Jorhat, Majuli, Mariani, Dergaon and Teok Assembly constituencies even as the alliance partners BJP and AGP are coming out with counter-claims in their poll meetings in those areas.

Congress candidates, including Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, are seeking popular mandate to form their government for the fourth consecutive term to continue the developmental activities, while the BJP-AGP alliance is bitterly criticising the Congress for corruption in every sphere in all the six constituencies.

The Election Commission data states that 7,72,904 voters are eligible to exercise their franchise in the six Assembly constituencies where development and corruption have became the most dominant issues for the two major contenders the Congress and the BJP-AGP alliance.

Though the Congress initially resorted to replay the secret killing episode in a bid to corner the AGP in Jorhat, Titabor, Mariani and Teok, later the ruling party preferred only to play its development card as well as the anti-BJP propaganda in all these constituencies.

According to the Congress, the saffron party has been indulging in a false propaganda. The BJP-AGP alliance will not be able to form the government in the State, say Congress leaders who appealed to the voters not to be wooed by the BJP.

As the BJP has not been able to play the issue of corruption well and suffered from factionalism after the alliance with the AGP, general voters in all the constituencies of Jorhat election district have predicated that no tough contest will take place in the traditional Congress strongholds like Jorhat, Titabor, Majuli and Dergaon.

However, the same voters now opine that they could feel a pro-BJP wave much more in Jorhat and some other constituencies in the aftermath of Prime Minister Narendra Modis inspiring speech here on March 26.

In past three days, BJP candidates and star campaigners intensified campaigns across Jorhat, Titabor, Mariani and Majuli, besides helping the AGP candidates in Dergaon and Teok, with renewed criticism of the Congress for their rampant corruption that has led to the States lack of development.

According to them, there was massive corruption in the greater Titabor water supply project, multistorey car parking project and storm-water drainage in Jorhat during the Congress rule. They said the Congress government is also responsible for the delay in the establishment of the National Institute of Design at Jorhat, besides many other projects which were promised to be completed before 2014.
