Devastating fire guts 100 houses, shops at Rongjeng

TURA, March 2 - More than 100 houses, shops and godowns were gutted in a major fire that broke out this morning at Rongjeng village in East Garo Hills district.

The fire was doused after more than three-and-a-half hours by multiple fire tenders which were pressed into service. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. Eye witnesses said that the fire emanated from a bakery and spread quickly.

A total of 40 shops were destroyed in the fire along with 28 godowns. As many as 36 kutcha houses were also gutted.

Deputy Commissioner of the district, Swapnil Tembe, stated that compensation would be paid according to NDRF rates. An assessment of the fire damage is yet to be undertaken.
