Devanand Konwar joins AIUDF

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Jan 20 - Former Bihar Governor and Assam Minister Devanand Konwar today formally joined the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) at a public meeting at Chenga in Barpeta.

Konwar joined the AIUDF in the presence of party chief Badruddin Ajmal and several legislators of the party.

The news of Konwar joining the AIUDF was rife for quite some time in the political circuit although there was no official confirmation. His recent war of words with Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi was, however, enough indication that all was not well between him and the Congress camp.

Konwar, a two-time Minister during the Congress regime in the State, is expected to be given a key role in the party ahead of the ensuing Assembly polls in the State, party sources confirmed.

Konwars joining the AIUDF is expected to improve the partys standing in Upper Assam areas, where it has no prominent leaders. Political analysts believe that Konwar will help the party to shed its image that AIUDF is a party with only minority leaders.
