DOOMDOOMA, June 1 - World No Tobacco Day was observed at Rupai High School here on Friday.
On the occasion, the students of the school brought out an awareness rally in the vicinity of the school and tried to create awareness among the masses on the ill effects of use of all types of tobacco.
Earlier, the Headmaster of the school Prakash Dutta explained the significance of the day and elaborated on the diseases caused by the use of tobacco.
Along with the teachers, the SMDC president of the school Dr Bulu Tanti and vice president Abhijit Khataniar also attended the programme.
Later, the students, teachers and all present on the occasion pledged to avoid all kinds of tobacco.
Meanwhile, the Tinsukia District Legal Service Authority also observed the day at Borhapjan High School. An awareness meeting on ill effects of tobacco use was organised among the students.

IN HAILAKANDI: World No Tobacco Day was observed in several schools and health centres across Hailakandi district on Friday, our Correspondent adds.
The day was observed with much enthusiasm and fervour at Katlicherra Girls� High School, SAM High School, JCHS School, Jamira High School, MRC High School, Harekrishna High School, AC Girls� HS School, Nityanandapur High School, GSM HS School, Rangauti High School, Panchgram Town High School and Kaibari High School respectively.
Various speakers spoke on the significance of the day and the ill effects of smoking and other tobacco products on health. They urged the students to keep themselves away from smoking and other tobacco products to maintain a healthy lifestyle. A pledge was administered to the students to abstain from all sorts of tobacco consumption on the occasion.
�We believe that students and youth can be the best medium for disseminating the message about harmful affects of tobacco and allied products on health and thus help in curbing the menace,� said Inspector of Schools Rajiv Kumar Jha.
The day was observed in 25 health centres where screening of cancer was conducted as well as awareness meetings were organised. District Media Expert Monika Das informed that all the health institutions observed the day in a befitting manner, besides a district-level awareness programme was held at the GNM Training School.
World No Tobacco Day is an annual awareness day sponsored by the World Health Organisation (WHO) since 1987. The event is intended to highlight the health risks associated with tobacco use and encourage governments to adopt effective policies to reduce smoking and the use of other tobacco products.
According to WHO, tobacco use kills more than 7 million people around the world each year, and that number is predicted to grow unless anti-tobacco action is increased.
In the United States, tobacco use is the largest preventable cause of death and multiple diseases. It causes many types of cancer as well as heart disease, stroke, lung disease and other health problems.
The focus of World No Tobacco Day 2019 is �Tobacco and Lung Health�. The WHO is drawing attention to the essential role of lungs in the health and well-being of all people, and the harmful effects of tobacco on lung health. The WHO says knowledge about how tobacco harms the lungs is low among the public in some countries.
IN BARPETA: World No Tobacco Day was observed at Barpeta with a day-long programme by several institutions and organisations, our Correspondent adds.
The District Legal Service Authority took out a procession in the morning aiming at generating awareness of people against use of tobacco products.
The procession started from St Teressa School and came to an end in the court campus of the district session court. Several judges, officials of the court, advocates, students and teachers participated in the procession. Later, a meeting held in the court premises was addressed by a number of dignitaries.
St Teresa School organised a slogan and essay writing competition among the students based on the objectives of the day.
The District Health Society also organised a number of programmes to observe the day. A plantation programme and signature drive were also conducted in the presence of officials of the department and Principal of Barpeta Vidyapeeth HS School Manika Das.
Later, a procession was flagged off by Dr Tirthanath Sarma, Joint Director of Health Service, Barpeta.
Further, an awareness meeting was organised at Barpeta Vidyapeeth Higher Secondary School where the speakers narrated the evils associated with tobacco products to the students. The school also organised a quiz competition among the students.
