Deshi Janagosthia community concern on NRC

By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 24 - A delegation of the Deshi Janagosthia Mancha, Assam, in its meeting with the State National Register of Citizens (NRC) Coordinator Prateek Hajela, has placed the resentment of its people on the issue of NRC updating.

The delegation led by Mancha working president Islamul Haque Mandal, told the NRC Coordinator on August 19 that the despite the Deshi Janagosthia community being historically recognised as an indigenous community and their members regarded to be the sons of the soil, the officials engaged for field verification refuse to record them as original Inhabitants. The column meant for writing the Original Inhabitant is left blank in the case of this community, without assigning any reason for that, alleged the delegation members, adding that this has created a sense of discrimination and fear in the minds of the people of this community.

They wanted to know whether there was any specific instruction from the authorities concerned to the field officials to leave the column blank in the case of the Deshi Janagosthia people. The Mancha delegation urged the authorities concerned for taking all the necessary steps to remove the lapses, if required, and ensure that the Deshi community people are not deprived of any legitimate and constitutional rights. The NRC Coordinator assured the delegation of all necessary steps to ensure that no person from the Deshi community is left out in the updated NRC.
