Dergaon residents seek respite from dilapidated roads

By Correspondent

DERGAON, Nov 28 - The residents of Dergaon town and its adjacent areas have been facing serious difficulties in surface communication since quite a long time now due to very bad condition of the roads. Though almost all the roads are in a very bad condition in greater Dergaon area, however, the most deplorable state of two specific roads have laid bare the utter negligence by the PWD (Roads) Division.

A part of the historic Pandit Hem Chandra Goswami (PHCG) Road connecting the RCC bridge over the Gelabeel to NH-37 at Dergaon Chariali is in such a condition that it is enough to ensure a bone-jarring ride to anyone who dares to take a ride on that particular stretch at Chaupatty area in Ward No. 2 and 3. In the heart of Dergaon town, the road is in a state of utter disrepair. As it is the only means of surface communication to Dergaon and Golaghat district headquarter, the exasperated residents, who are primarily cultivators of the greater Brahmaputra area, have to endure a lot of suffering and personal loss on a daily basis while transporting their agricultural produce to the town.

Similarly, the condition of the heritage road popularly known as Purani Relor Ali connecting National Highway-37 at Negheriting Chariali with the PHCG Road at Baruabamungaon Railway Station via Kamargaon, has deteriorated by the day following non-repair since the last several years.

The residents have obviously urged the government to repair the road immediately.

As all the roads in Khumtai area are well developed, those in Dergaon area are deteriorating by the day. We, the residents of Dergaon town have been facing serious problem due to the dilapidated condition of road communication since several years now, rued Ramesh Baruah, a resident of Dergaons Ward No. 1.

Paban Bora, a resident of Lathagaon said that the road from Negheriting to Baruabamungaon Railway Station should be repaired as early as possible, otherwise it would be impossible to use the broken macadamised road.

The government, it may be mentioned, often boasts about constructing new roads in the state, but the existing roads present a dismal picture of disrepair and bad maintenance ethics, especially in the rural areas, a resident of Kamargaon observed. Seeking respite from the dilapidated roads, he wondered if their genuine grievances will ever be redressed by those in the corridors of power.
