Dergaon residents demand statue of Rajeswar Singha

DERGAON, Dec 9 - The residents of Dergaon in Golaghat district have demanded installation of a statue of Ahom king Swargadeo Rajeswar Singha in the historic Rajabahar area.

A memorandum signed by several leading citizens of Dergaon was submitted by writer Rajen Pujari to Deputy Commissioner Bubhash Chandra Modi on Monday.

The memorandum was signed by citizens like Jiten Khound, Hariprasad Bordoloi, Bina Thakur Bezbarua, Debendra Nath Borah, Nurul Sultan, Sanjoy Kumar Hazarika, Dugdha Giswami, Pradip Khadaria, Anjan Pujari, Rana Sarmah, Deep Barthakur and others.

�King Rajeswar Singha used to spend his time at Rajabahar, Dergaon, from where he supervised the construction works of the Negheriting Siva Doul. Rajabahar was the storehouse of all properties collected from the people as revenue.

A patnaad (well) built in the tenure of Rajeswar Singha was discovered on the DKD College premises in Rajabahar area in 1964.

The memorandum also urged the State government to rebuild the Azad Pustakalaya from where eminent poet and art critic Nilamoni Phukan started his literary journey.

Rajen Pujari told this correspondent that the copy of the memorandum will also be submitted to the Chief Manager of NRL and the MLAs of Khumtai and Dergaon.
