SILCHAR, Nov 14 - The platinum jubilee celebration of the historic temple of Baram Baba situated amidst the tea garden locality of Silcoorie area on the outskirts of Silchar began on Sunday.
�The history of this temple dates back to the British period. It was named after Saint Lunthuram Kurmi. Thousands of devotees and priests from across the country throng the temple every year during the four-day festival,� said Jawaharlal Pandey, a priest of the temple.
The celebrations began with the ceremonial inauguration of the festival by Maharaj Baikuntananda of Silchar Ramakrishna Mission in the presence of Lakhipur MLA Rajdip Goala. The festival brings together devotees irrespective of religion and caste from all parts of the country with a message of unity. �Since my childhood I have been coming here during the annual festival and it is no less than a pilgrimage,� Rajdeep Goala said.
Meanwhile, MLA of Sonai constituency, Aminul Haque Laskar who also attended the celebrations said that people must stand up to cooperate for this place to become a tourist spot. He informed that he would allot Rs 10 lakh from the untied fund from the 2017-18 FY for beautification of the temple. Seeking support from the Lakhipur legislator, Aminul said, �We must work together to turn the temple into a tourist destination in Barak Valley.�
Meanwhile, elaborate security arrangement has been made by the Cachar District Administration as well as the police to avert any untoward incident during the festival. A book written by noted journalist Sanath Koiri on the historical significance of the festival was also released in the occasion.
