Deplorable condition of Doomdooma Town Field resented

By ABHIJIT KHATANIAR

DOOMDOOMA, Aug 3 - Sports lovers, players and sports organisers have resented the deplorable condition of the historic Doomdooma Town Field. The field situated in the heart of the tea town and carrying the British legacy has been badly damaged by waterlogging for the last several years. This waterlogging problem has emerged due to the unplanned and haphazard construction around the playground.

This playground has the reputation of being scientifically constructed playground by the British and was known as European Club Field before it was handed over to Doomdooma Town Committee by the then Superintendent of Doomdooma Tea Company, PC Cashbourn on June 26 , 1951. Along with a specious playground with an area of about 10 acres, it had a Planters Club for recreational activities and playing various games and sports.

The field was handed over to the local body by the British for playing games and sports and for welfare activities of the youths of this area. But, due to the negligence of the town civic body, the condition of this historic playground has become deplorable. The original area of the field has shrunk to such extent that it is now not possible to construct a modern stadium here to hold various games and sports for future generations.

The sports lovers, players and sports organisers have urged Doomdooma Town Committee to take some prompt action to improve the present condition of the playground.
