NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Feb 27 The Deori Sixth Schedule Demand Committee has welcomed the Congress vice president Rahul Gandhis observation that the issue of granting the Sixth Schedule status to some autonomous councils merits a discussion. This was stated by Leeladhar Deori, president, and Suman Deori, secretary of the committee, in a press release here today.

Terming the present autonomous councils as meaningless without the Sixth Schedule status, the Deori leaders hailed Gandhis meeting with representatives of various autonomous councils in Diphu on February 25 and asked the governments at the Centre and in the State to take necessary steps in this regard before the Lok Sabha polls in Assam.

The committee also lauded Gandhis call for womens reservation.
