GUWAHATI, March 10 - World Dentists� Day was observed in the city by the Guwahati local branch of the Indian Dental Association on March 6, according to a press release.
The function held on the occasion was chaired by Dr J Barman. It was attended by many senior and young dental surgeons, including secretary of the association Dr Rahul Deuri and Vice Principal of the Regional Dental College here Dr AC Bhuyan.
Founder principal of the Regional Dental College Dr BR Bhuyan delivered a talk on the occasion elaborating on the status of dentistry in the past and in the present times.
According to him, dentistry is no longer confined to removal of loose or decayed teeth. The science has adequately developed to take measures for prevention of pathological problems and correction of deformities and management of trauma and injuries in the oro-facial system. At present, the standard of dental practice in India is at par with the developed countries of the world.
Presently, the NE region has around 2,000 qualified dentists, and of them, around 1,200 belong to Assam. While about 350 of the State�s dentists are engaged in government services in the medical colleges and the dental college, the rest them are self-employed and they are working in different parts of the State, said Dr BR Bhuyan.
He appealed to the dental surgeons to respect and adhere to the code of ethics prescribed by the Indian Dental Association in order to maintain and uphold the dignity and honour of the dental profession and to ensure the promotion of dental science.
