Demonetisation done sans planning: Sangma

By Correspondent

SHILLONG, Dec 7 - Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has lashed out at the Union Government saying the demonetisation policy was undertaken without planning and in a hurry leading to hardship for citizens.

Speaking to the media after a Cabinet meeting on Monday, Sangma said, policy decisions are sometimes taken in a hurry, but these are done after planning. However, in the case of demonetisation, the Centre had no plans how to implement the policy.

The Chief Minister said, the step is good, but the manner it was implemented raises a lot of questions. Sangma said several people have died during the past one month.

Pointing out that there is a lot to be desired from the banking sector, Sangma said, there are less banks and ATMs throughout the State. The same is true in the rest of the country and therefore people are facing hardships. Sangma said all this has led to a chaotic situation with long queues in the country.

On Prime Minister Narendra Modis push for a cashless society, he said, there are not many who have Smartphones in the country and many are illiterate to carry on such transactions. He also pointed out that peoples awareness on e-wallets is poor. On the new currencies, he said, a women has already been duped with three fake Rs 2,000 notes as there is less awareness on the security features of the notes.

Sangma, moreover, said, that the Income Tax department is understaffed and several people are getting notices, both tribals and non-tribals. In view of this shortage of staff there would again be a chaotic situation, he said.
