Demo on emergency communication

GUWAHATI, July 28 - As part of its initiative to develop an emergency communication system to meet any kind of disaster striking the State, the 1st Bn NDRF on Monday conducted a demonstration at Assam Police Radio Organization, Guwahati, Assam.

During the demonstration, the NDRF expert group highlighted the installation and operation of various modern communication system like V-SAT, INMARSAT and Quick Deployment Antenna (QDA) which according to the group are simple, robust and highly reliable for tackling the challenges emerging from disasters, and in minimizing the impact of disasters in terms of reducing the magnitude of death and causalities.

While addressing the event, Commandant of 1st Bn NDRF referred to the Uttarakhand disaster and other major disasters in the country and said that these tragedies should be an eye opener on disaster preparedness. �The major disasters are a lesson to prepare for all kind of emergencies,� said the officer, emphasizing the importance of communication technology in disaster management to ensure continuity of the flow of real time data and information during all phases of disasters, namely, disaster preparedness, disaster reduction, disaster mitigation and post disaster rehabilitation.

In the backdrop of natural disasters like earthquake seriously disrupting the communication network damaging the mobile towers, P&T lines and microwave towers and badly affecting the satellite communication facilities, the NDRF has been focusing on developing an emergency communication plan to provide dependable communication during disasters and calamities in Assam and conducting training programmes and demonstrations.

Monday�s demonstration of the NDRF was witnessed by Additional Director General of Police, Assam, besides other high ranking officials, including SDRF personnel.
