Demand to preserve, beautify NCB Hall

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, July 4 The All Assam Library Association is determined to frustrate any move to demolish the century-old Nabin Chandra Bordoloi (NCB) Hall and Library building in the city. It is also against any move to construct any structure on the NCB compound and is for developing the compound into an attractive tourist destination and the NCB Hall and Library into a model library.

The Association has submitted memorandums to the Chief Minister, Minister Cultural Affairs and Commissioner of the Cultural Affairs Department in this connection, requesting their interventions into the reported move to demolish the age-old NCB building.

The Association called for steps to restore the academic atmosphere of the NCB compound with proper steps to enhance its beauty, through consultation with the leading architects and even the Lucknow-based National Research Laboratory for Conservation of Cultural Property for the purpose.

The plot of land on which the NCB Hall is standing, does not belong to the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) and hence the GMC office etc which are located on the compound should be shifted to other areas and the entire plot of land should be allotted to the NCB Hall, said the Association.

The NCB Hall and Library should be preserved and developed into a model public library. It should also help enhancing the academic atmosphere of the entire area, in which two leading academic institutions of higher learning are also situated, said the Association.

A delegation of the Association met Cultural Affairs Minister Bismita Gogoi also and had a cordial discussion with her on the above issues, said Association president Prof Alaka Buragohain.
