Demand to nab Kalita�s killers

MIRZA, Aug 3 � The last rites of 28-year-old All Assam Non-Tribal Students� Union activist Arup Kalita � the skeletal remains of whom was recovered yesterday from a pond of Kukurmara Forest Department under Kamrup West Forest Division � was performed today here at 2 No Chatabari village under Chhaygaon constituency.

People in thousands, who gathered to pay the last respect to the youth, raised unanimous demand to bring the guilty to the book. �The authorities concerned should take measures against those who are responsible,� a section of grief stricken people said and added that certain section of people involved in timber smuggling and a section of Forest Department official are behind Kalita�s death.

It may be mentioned here that on the basis of the petition filed by Prafulla Kalita at Gauhati High Court the latter has directed police to file a progress report and consequently Chhaygaon police, after pumping out the water of the pond, had recovered the skeletal remains of Arup Kalita who had remained untraced for the past 11 months.

On the other hand, Officer Incharge of Chhaygaon Police Station and Investigation Officer of the case AK Azad were transferred as investigation into the incident was slow.
