By Correspondent

KALGACHIA, Sept 30 A 16-member delegation of the Kalgachia Civil Subdivision Demand Committee met the State Chief Secretary Naba Kumar Das recently in the conference hall of the Dispur Secretariat office and submitted a memorandum to him, urging fulfilment of the long-pending demand of the people of west Barpeta area for a new subdivision with headquarters at Kalgachia.

The memorandum was signed and submitted in the presence of the demand committee president and Jania MLA Abdul Khaleque, general secretary and ex-APSC member M Mozammel Hussain and others.

In support of constituting the third subdivision of Barpeta district taking Kalgachia as its headquarters, the demand committees general secretary M Mozammel Hussain, citing the socio-economic, erosion and other basic problems of the vast char-chapori areas of west and south-west Barpeta, put forward his opinion on the necessity of formation of a subdivision at Kalgachia.

The report prepared and submitted by the Kohili Commission in 1975 to the then Assam Government pointed out that the historical places situated in areas like Fulara Chatala, Hadirachaki and Bheragaon, the birth place of Bhattadev, the father of Assamese prose-literature, would be befittingly preserved and developed by constituting the proposed subdivision. It was also stated that the dream of the former Indian President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed would be fulfilled if the subdivision was created.

The delegation also met Revenue Minister Dr Bhumidhar Barman, Power Minister Pradyut Bardoloi and Barpeta MP Ismail Hussain and gave them copies of the memorandum to draw their attention towards the matter.
