By Correspondent

TIHU, Dec 29 Tihu is one of the oldest revenue cirlces in Assam comprising 48 mouzas which was set up way back in 1897 in the then undivided Kamrup district. It has now all the infrastructural facilities required for a civil subdivision. As such the demand for the setting up of a subdivision at Tihu has been a long standing one.

To submit a memorandum justifying the demand to set up Nalbari districts second subdivision at Tihu, an 11-member delegation of the Subdivision Demand Committee, Tihu met Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi at his residence recently and urged him to set up the proposed subdivision at Tihu as per the proposal of the GAC (B) 216/96/8 dtd Dispur, July 22, 1999.

A separate memorandum was also submitted to Dr Bhumidhar Barman, State Revenue Minister, justifying the demand of setting up the civil subdivision at Tihu as it is the second biggest town in Nalbari district. Referring to the historical background of Tihu, it was stated that Tihu is one of the oldest circles with 48 mouzas comprising a vast area but following the policy of decentralisation of administrative facilities some new circles were created.

The Tihu Town Committee was established in 1951 and now all infrastructural facilities like judicial magistrate office, full fledged police station, sub-treasury office, block development office, block education office, post office, railway station, four nationalised banks including a State Bank of India, registrars office, irrigation and agricultural extension office, employment exchange office, FCI godown, ASEB subdivisional office, water supply, 30-bed rural hospital, weaving centre, telecommunication service office are located here.

Besides many other small-scale industries are located at Tihu with a big market. More than 20 PWD roads are connected with Tihu. Both the Kohli Commission in 1974 and subsequently the Majumdar Commission in 1988 have justified setting up of a civil subdivision at Tihu.

Meanwhile, in support of the demand various agitational programmes like a three-hour rail blockade, National Highway No 31 blockade, mass fasting, bike rally, torch procession and public meeting were carried out recently at Tihu.

A large number of people from Tihu also gathered at Dispur Last Gate today to lend their voices for setting up the proposed subdivision at Tihu. Memorandums were also submitted to the Chief Secretary and to some cabinet ministers explaining the legitimacy of a subdivision at Tihu.
