Demand for removal of Manipur varsity VC intensifies

By Correspondent

IMPHAL, June 23 - The demand for the removal of Manipur University Vice Chancellor Prof Adya Prasad Pandey from his post for his alleged ill conduct intensified on Saturday.

While the Manipur University Students Union (MUSU), Manipur University Teachers Association and Manipur University Staff Association (MUSA) continued to stage a sit-in demonstration inside the University campus, local people also joined the protest by staging a sit-in demonstration at Kakwa, demanding immediate solution to the ongoing crisis.

The functioning of the university has been completely paralysed after the MUSU launched its agitation demanding removal of the VC. The MUSU has alleged that the VC has failed to take any initiative for the development of the institution, leaving the university in a paralysed state.

The indefinite shutdown of the MUSU entered the 24th day today.

Meanwhile, the VC has claimed that he has been working for the welfare of the students and the university since assuming office.

Newmai News adds: Expressing serious concern over the alleged threats and intimidation to some students within the Manipur University for their preoccupation with their studies and not participating in the ongoing agitation launched by the MUSU, All Tribal Students Union, Manipur (ATSUM), Kuki Students Organisation-General Headquarters and All Naga Students Association, Manipur (ANSAM) have advised the MUSU to refrain from intimidating that is tantamount to human rights violation. The three student bodies also asked the MUSU to stop harassing and imposing ones will.

In a joint statement, the three student organisations said that they would not tolerate such threats and intimidations.
